Idiots Guide: 10 Most Influential ‘Ancient Aliens’ Theorists

“Millions of people around the world believe that we have been visited in the past by extraterrestrial beings…what if it were true?  -Ancient Aliens (H2) The advent of that query has caused a severe foundational breach on the flood gates of wild speculation. The ‘Ancient Astronaut Theory’ is the distillation of pseudo-science, historical folklore and conspiratorial hyperbole, starring aliens. So, is it true? The short answer is that nobody knows for sure. However, ancient astronaut theorists (also known as the ‘Paranormal Rat Pack‘) and their followers, which number in the millions, are staunchly convinced of this. They have no shortage of detractors. Critics like the late Astrophysicist Carl Sagan and Author Jason Colavito think that Erik Von Daniken, Author of the best selling book that started it all ‘Chariot of the Gods’ also known as the ‘father’ of the ancient astronaut theory, is a world class hack, who is for lack of a better term, full of shit. He is albeit, a very wealthy feces receptacle. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that some of the so-called ‘evidence’ wasn’t slightly compelling. ‘Ancient Aliens’ exists, in my DVR library. However, there are certainly more questions than answers. The controversy comes from the fact that A.A. theorists are willing to accept a relatively broad interpretation of ‘evidence’. They have no problem extrapolating like-minded interpretation from the otherwise benign historical record of ancient structures and Sumerian cuneiform. How did the ancients move 100 ton blocks of granite into pyramid shapes with perfect symmetrical lines? Apparently, that’s a very good question. Idiots Guide presents a list of 10 influential Ancient Astronaut Theorists who claim to have the possible answer(s) to the alien question. Claims of ‘Pseudoscience’ be damned.

The Leaders of the Ancient Astronaut Theory…

#10.   Zecharia Sitchin

Zecharia Sitchin

Zecharia Sitchin is a controversial Russian-American author who has some beliefs about human evolution on earth that many consider to be bizarre. In short,  Sitchin is an ‘Ancient Astronaut’ theorist who believes that ancient Sumerians and there relationship to a culture of people called the ‘Anunnaki’, are a race of extraterrestrials from the hypothetical planet of ‘Nibiru’, a planet that is engaged in an elliptical orbit, that reaches our solar system every 3,600 years. So it’s going to be awhile until it swings back around. He claims that they (Anunnaki) created workers (Human Beings) by genetic engineering to work as slaves in gold mines (they needed gold on their home planet, atmosphere issues) because they found the mining work was too difficult, lucky for them us humans work hard. You got all of that? Millions of people have, even if you haven’t. His books, including ‘The 12th Planet’ (1976) have sold copies in the millions. As of this writing Sitchin  is alive and kicking at 90.

#9.   George Noory

georgenoory-slider

George Noory is the preeminent radio talk show host for all matters regarding the strange, taboo, clandestine and conspiratorial. Noory is that voice of alien authority you might hear on AM radio during weekday nights, a show called ‘Coast to Coast AM’.  You may have seen his actual face on the popular History channel series ‘Ancient Aliens’, which has a huge cult following. Noory has taken the baton from former alien czar, Art Bell in dealing with all things paranormal and/or conspiratorial. But then Art Bell came out of retirement to start the ‘Dark Matter Radio Network’ allegedly because Noory was getting ‘too political’. If nothing else Noory’s radio voice is quite compelling. He is known as the enabling steward for the arguably delusional, pseudoscientific and occasionally paranoid beliefs of his listeners. Then again, it’s not paranoid if they’re really after you, right? At the end of the day there is an alternative path for intellectual consideration when you’re part of his audience. This makes George Noory influential and number 9 on our list of esteemed ancient astronaut theorists.

#8.   Jason Martell

Jason Martell

Jason Martell is an author, researcher and frequent television contributor on the History Channel series ‘Ancient Aliens’. He is best known for his book ‘Knowledge Apocalypse: Ancient Astronauts & the Search for Planet X’ (2011). He is an outspoken proponent of the ancient astronaut theory in his pursuit of knowledge in the realm of Ancient Artifacts, Astronauts and unexplained ancient structures…on Mars. Yes, that Mars. Apparently, there are ‘structures’ and/or geographic anomalies on Mars that astronaut theorists believe are evidence of alien activity in the remote past. Ironically, Martell doesn’t have an issue with belief in aliens and his religious beliefs. He is the co-founder of GodTube.com, a Christian content website. Go figure.

#7.  Nick Redfern

nickredfern

Nicholas Redfern is a British born best-selling Author, Ufologist and Cryptozoologist. He is a staunch proponent of government transparency with regards to the disclosure of UFO information. He knows that they know that he knows. Nick is also an advocate of the ‘Ancient Astronaut Theory’. Nick claims that it makes no sense that human beings have evolved to the degree that we have while other animals in the kingdom have stayed relatively the same. Aliens must have manipulated our DNA profile. Aliens have been here before, might still be here today and the governments of the world are covering it up, says Nick. It’s possible that he’s right, we just can’t be sure. If so inclined, you can read Nick’s work in ‘Phenomena Magazine’ of which he is a contributing editor. His views are laced with contentions of the conspiratorial, as found in his 2005 book ‘Body Snatchers in the Desert: The Horrible Truth at the Heart of the Roswell Story’ in which he claims that the Roswell crash may have been the result of military testing using Japanese POWs, suffering from the disease ‘Progeria’. Is this true? Nick Redfern is dedicated to finding out for us.

#6.  Philip Coppens

Philp Coppens 2

The late Philip Coppens was a controversial Belgian Author, Investigative Journalist and Radio Host, whose work largely dealt with issues concerning alternative historical explanations and fringe/pseudo science. Namely, the ‘Ancient Astronaut Theory’ and issues that pertain to it. Coppens was a foundational contributor for the History Channel program ‘Ancient Aliens’ in which he appeared in over a dozen episodes. He was a significant contributor on the book ‘The Stargate Conspiracy’ (1999), as well as ‘The Canopus Revelation’ (2004) and ‘Servants of the Grail’ (2009). Sadly, in December of 2012 Coppens died from an extremely rare case of cancer called ‘Angiosarcoma’.

#5.   Linda Moulton Howe

linda-moulton-howe

Linda Moulton Howe is an Investigative Journalist who believes in aliens. She is best recognized for her advocacy regarding UFO’s and the governments role in alleged clandestine collusion and cover-up, as well as investigations involving the bizarre cattle mutilation phenomenon. Howe’s career has dealt largely with a variety of conspiracy theories as well as ‘Crop Circle’ investigations and their supposed relation to extraterrestrials, (ie. Aliens). There’s something going on out there and Linda Howe is on the case. In her own words “I am convinced that one or more alien intelligences are affecting this planet”. You might be right Linda. I contend that there is circumstantial  evidence to suggest that downtown Los Angeles might actually be ground zero.

#4.  David Wilcox

David Wilcox

In my opinion, David Wilcox is the kind of best-selling ‘New Age’ Author that is very impressed with his own reflection. This is probably because two of his books, ‘The Source Field Investigations’ (2011) and ‘The Synchronicity Key'(2013), both hit the The New York Times Best Seller list, but I’m just guessing. He is an enthusiastic advocate of the A.A. theory. Wilcox is an oft contributing guest on History Channel’s ‘Ancient Aliens’ and he seems to be eager to interpret works of ancient cuneiform as evidence of alien activity and influence in the historical record. Is he saying something that can uncover hidden truth(s)? Who knows? However, I am certain that he believes he looks great whenever he says it. (Note: the picture pose above)

#3.   David Childress

David Childress

Of all of the Ancient Astronaut Theorists,  David Hatcher Childress is without question, the most eager to speculate about alien activity in ancient history. You show him a picture, cuneiform and/or ancient structure, and David will speculate that perhaps aliens were involved. He doesn’t know for sure, but it’s always a definite maybe with this guy. Which makes sense for an Author and publisher (He owns ‘Adventures Unlimited Press’) who specializes in material on all topics taboo, mysterious, strange and unusual. Especially when it comes to the alien question. David’s career has revolved around unexplained phenomena and a dogged belief in alternative history and the kind of  historical revisionism that goes with it hand in hand. If you want to talk about lost cities like Atlantis, and/or arctic pole shifting and/or the hollow earth theory, David Childress is the man you want to talk to.

#2. Erich von Däniken

Erik Von Daniken

Erich von Däniken‘s book ‘Chariots of the Gods?’ (1968) is widely considered the seminal work that started the world-wide ‘Ancient Astronaut’ phenomenon. His ‘Paleo-Contact’ ancient astronauts hypotheses has ignited a wildfire of historical speculation. He did this by simply asking the question ‘Did aliens visit earth during ancient times and influence human culture and/or even create our humanity as we know it today?’ von Däniken claims that the evidence is out there hiding in plain sight, needing only an open mind and willingness to believe for it to have a basis in fact. His detractors, of which there are many, claim that his assertions are nothing more than ‘Pseudo-history’ and ‘Pseudo-archaeology’. However, his proponents number in the millions as evidenced by his extraordinary book sales. Books that claim among other things, that the Egyptian pyramids were created with a level of technological knowledge that shouldn’t have existed at that time of human evolution. As well as speculation that the Caucasian race was manufactured by aliens after the Negro race failed to advance as quickly as they liked. True story…according to von Däniken. Where that leaves Asians and the other races, you’d have to ask him. Whatever the case, Erich von Däniken is considered to be the father of the Ancient Astronaut Theory as we know it today. And as such greatly influential…

#1.   Giorgio A. Tsoukalos

Giorgio Tsoukalous

Where Erich von Däniken left off,  the Swiss-born Greek-Austrian writer, publisher and television personality Giorgio A. Tsoukalos picked up….and ran very fast. He is the director of Erich von Däniken’s Center for Ancient Astronaut Research (the A.A.S. R.A.—Archaeology, Astronautics and SETI Research Association). Tsoukalos brought the Ancient Astronaut Theory to the cable television masses, he is the consulting producer of ‘Ancient Aliens’ on History Channel and was the host of ‘In Search of Aliens’ on the now defunct H2 channel. He is today the iconic personality behind the entire A.A. movement. Not a bad landing spot for the former IFBB bodybuilding promoter. Giorgio is an enthusiastic proponent of the notion and/or belief that alien astronauts aided, influenced and perhaps specifically molded ancient humanity. Is he nuts? No. Giorgio seems to be a highly functioning, intelligent individual, with all of his faculties firmly in place. It’s just a weird hairstyle, not a criminal indictment, or evidence of mental illness. Time will tell if any, all, or some of this movements beliefs ring true. If so, Giorgio’s hair will be the last thing for human beings to be wholly concerned with.
